Dump Valves, or turbo car wastegates as they are sometimes known, provide a release for the unused boost pressure when you release the throttle on a turbo.

As a car with a turbo accelerates it creates boost or 'positive pressure' but once you lift your foot off the accelerator the throttle will close, preventing the built up boost from escaping, so it backs up through the intercooler. This in turn causes back pressure on the turbo and tries to prevent it from spinning.

Fitting a Dump Valve will prevent this as it provides the necessary escape route for the boost. This in turn means that turbo lag will be reduced and there will be a faster pick up between gear changes.

There are two main types of Dump Valve.

Atmospheric Dump Valves - these valves release the unused boost into the atmosphere and cause a 'whoosh' sound.

Recirculating (diverter) Valves - these re-circulate the unused boost back into the air intake system so are silent.
