How to clean the exterior of a car
1. So you want to wash your car! First you need to park it in a suitable position. You'll need to have access all round and ideally a hose nearby for rinsing. Shady positions are best if possible and ideally you should give the metalwork time to cool if it has been in the sun.
2. Get everything you will need close by so you're not hunting for equipment and products later.
3. Put some car wash soap in a bucket and fill with warm water to make it nice and bubbly! It's important that you use car washing soap as normal soap liquid (such as washing up liquid) will wash the wax away.
4. Give the car a good spray down with a hose with a spray attachment to wash away any loose bits of dirt and dust. The bumper may need a bit more attention to get rid of any muck and grime so give it a bit of a scrub with a Bug Shifter sponge.
5. Grab a soft cloth, sponge or noodle mitt and dunk it in the soapy water. Start from the top of the car and wipe the car clean in small sections at a time. Rinse the cloth or sponge before you put it back in the water - this way you'll keep the soapy water nice and clean and avoid putting even more dirt on you car!
6. Give the wheels a good clean with a small cloth or wheel cleaning brush - again using the soapy water.
7. Give the wheels a good rinse taking care to get all the soap off.
8. Now it's time to dry the car with a cloth - chamois leathers are ideal.
9. Put a bit of polish on a buffer pad and buff the whole car.
10. Apply some wax by hand or with an electric car polisher.
11. Apply some tyre shine.
12. Give the windows a good clean using some specialist glass cleaner and a soft cloth. If you wind the windows down slightly you'll also be able to clean the strip at the top which often gets a bit dirty.
13. Finally apply a trim preservative and admire the results of your hard work!
